Installing Smatrix

Smatrix is only available for Android devices. (Smatrix does not work on Apple devices.)

Breeding Insight has compiled a record of devices that we have vetted or tried for use with Smatrix. Here are our device recommendations.

Here is a brief online tutorial that explains some basic Android tablet controls.

Step 1. Check the Wifi requirements.

While your device is connected to the internet, you can

  • Install the Smatrix App;

  • Import trials;

  • Export collected data (after returning from the field).

With no internet, you can

  • Collect data in the field.

Step 2. Install the Smatrix app

  1. Download Smatrix from the Google Play Store.

  2. Open Smatrix.

  3. When prompted, allow Smatrix to

    1. access photos, media, and files (so trials can be saved to your device);

    2. record audio (so speech commands can be used);

    3. make and manage phone calls (so incoming calls will not interfere with speech input);

    4. access your device’s location (so GPS coordinates can be added to trial information).

Permissions can be modified at any time:

Android settings > Apps > Smatrix > Permissions

Step 3. Activate Smatrix with a 30-day test license.

  1. Open Smatrix and select your preferred language.

  2. Select “30 day free trial”.
