Logging Data in Smatrix

After you’ve finished , you’re ready to enter data in Smatrix with your voice.

Speech Tutorial: A speech tutorial is available so you can familiarize yourself with voice commands in Smatrix. Go to Settings > Help > Speech Tutorial. (The tutorial takes approximately 7-10 minutes to complete).

Open a trial

  1. From the home page, start by tapping on the trial of choice.

  2. The trial will open. It has the following organization:

    1. Traits names appear at the top of the table, in the first row.

    2. Trial hierarchies appears on the left side of the table, in the first column.

About hierarchies. In Smatrix, “hierarchy” is a term used to specify the spatial organization of your field site. For example, a horticultural site might use the hierarchies “field, row, plot”. An aquacultural site might use the hierarchies “building, room, tank”. See Setting Hierarchies in Smatrix.

Fig. 56. On the Smatrix data logging table, the trait names appear at the top of the table. The trial hierarchies appear on the left.

3. The cell where data is ready to be entered is highlighted in green.

Start / Stop Speech Control

  1. Start the speech control with the voice command “Listen” or by tapping the microphone button in the lower right-hand corner.

  2. If a headset is connected, a headset or Bluetooth icon will be visible and the button will be highlighted in green.

  3. Stop the speech control with the voice command “Pause” or “Stop Listening” or by tapping the microphone button in the lower right-hand corner again.

Quick Settings bar

  1. The Quick Settings bar is located at the bottom of the screen.

  2. The Quick Settings bar can be expanded or minimized by tapping the triangle (three gray lines) in the lower left corner of the screen.

  3. There are three quick settings in the basic view:

    1. All Traits / Single Trait

    2. Automatic Progress On / Off

    3. Skipping Cells On / Off

A note about Quick Settings for Subsamples. The Quick Settings bar looks different if you are using subsamples. See Using Smatrix with Subsamples (page in development).

All Traits / Single Traits

4. The first Quick Setting is “All Traits / Single Traits”.

a. With “All Traits” selected, the progression of data collection is across rows. The data collector is collecting data for all traits across a single trial unit at a time.

b. With “Single Traits” selected, the progression of data collection is along the columns. The data collector is collecting data for a single trait at a time, across all trial units.

5. The speech commands “All Traits” and “Single Trait” can be used at any time to adjust this setting as needed.

Automatic Progress On / Off

6. The second Quick Setting is “Automatic Progress On / Off”.

a. With “Automatic Progress” turned on, the next cell is automatically selected after entering a value.

b. With “Automatic Progress” turned off, the user has to say “next” to proceed to the next cell.

7. The speech commands “Automatic Progress On” and “Automatic Progress Off” can be used at any time to adjust this setting as needed.

Skipping Cells On / Off

8. The third Quick Setting is “Skipping Cells On / Off”.

a. With “Skipping Cells” turned on, the cells that contain data are skipped.

b. With “Skipping Cells” turned off, the cells that contain data can be overwritten.

9. The speech commands “Skipping Cells On” and “Skipping Cells Off” can be used at any time to adjust this setting as needed.

Value Lexicon

  1. Values entered by voice must be within the defined value range

  2. Not available” is a special entry that can be used on any cell

  3. Numbers: spoken as a whole number of sequence of digits: “Fifty-five” or ”five five” = 55

  4. Decimals: spoken digit by digit. “Zero point two six” = 0.26

  5. Date: “Day, Month, Year” or “Month, Day, Year” or “Today”, “Tomorrow”, “Yesterday”

Trial with Subsamples

  1. For a trait with subsamples, a counter is displayed in the cell to show how many subsamples have been collected.

  2. Individual values are not immediately visible.

  3. Tap the cell to view the values of the subsamples.

  4. To leave the subsample view, tap the “back” arrow.

Field Navigation

  1. With Automatic Progress “On”, Smatrix advances to the next sequential plot based on plot number.

  2. Your field navigation will depend on how you number your plots.

Flexible Navigation

  1. Any cell can be navigated to by calling out its combination of trial unit and trait. Example: “Tray 1, Plant 3, Phytotoxicity

  2. The command “Next” will skip the current cell and progress to the next cell for data entry
