Using Field Book with BreedBase Instances
Welcome! These are instructions for using the Field Book phenotyping app with a BreedBase instance for a specific species (such as LettuceBase, SalmonBase, BlueberryBase, etc.). The instructions are also available as a slide deck.
We hope this information will assist you with becoming more familiar and comfortable with collecting information in Field Book and storing it in BreedBase.

Step 1. Installing Field Book on your Device
Field Book is only available for Android devices. (Field Book does not work on Apple devices.)
Breeding Insight has compiled a record of devices that we have vetted or tried for use with Field Book. Here are our device recommendations.
Here is a brief online tutorial that explains some basic Android tablet controls.
Downloading the Field Book application
Download the most recent version of Field Book from Google Play.

Step 2. Configuring Field Book on your Device
After Field Book has been installed, the next step is to adjust the settings in Field Book so that the application can import trait data from BreedBase.
Set the BrAPI version and Advanced Settings
In the Field Book home menu, select “Settings”.
Select “BrAPI”.
Under “BrAPI Version”, select “V2”.
Under the “OIDC FLOW” tab, select “Original Field Book Custom”.
Set the BrAPI Base URL

Identify the URL for your desired instance of BreedBase. (You can choose one from this complete list of species-specific BreedBase instances.)
In the Base URL field, enter the URL for your desired BreedBase instance (Fig. 1).
Select “Save and Authorize”.
You will be directed to the BreedBase platform.
Authorize Access to BreedBase
We are going to connect Field Book to BreedBase so that Field Book can import trial data.
In the previous step, you should have been automatically directed to the BreedBase platform.
Login with your BreedBase credentials (See Creating a BreedBase User Accountarchived.)
Select “Authorize Access”.
IMPORTANT: Select “Just once” in the pop-up field that appears at the bottom of the screen (Fig. 2).
You should be redirected back to the Field Book app.

Select “Collect” (Fig. 12).
Overview of the Collection Screen
3. The top of the screen shows information about the plot, the germplasm, or other field information. Click the grey arrows to change the information being viewed (Fig. 13).
4. The trait being phenotyped is visible between the green arrows . Scroll through the list of traits being measured by using these green arrows. You can see the entire list of traits available by tapping on the trait (Fig. 14).
5. The plot being phenotyped is visible between the black arrows . Scroll through the list of plots being phenotyped by using these black arrows (Fig. 15).
